Anthropic nears overtaking OpenAI in AI spending
Anthropic is rapidly narrowing the gap with OpenAI regarding corporate AI spending and may soon overtake its competitor. According to new data from Ramp, a corporate finance automation platform, Anthropic's market share among Ramp's customers has surged. Currently, 30.6% of Ramp's AI-paying customers utilize Anthropic, an increase of 6.3 percentage points since March. OpenAI remains slightly ahead with a 35.2% share, but the margin has diminished significantly. A spokesperson for Ramp stated that at the current growth rate, Anthropic is on track to surpass OpenAI within the next two months. The data indicates that Anthropic already leads in specific sectors such as software, finance, insurance, and personal services, as well as among early adopters like venture capital-backed companies. This trend is supported by the strong performance of Anthropic's Claude Code, which has gained significant traction among software engineers and developers. Additionally, benchmarking data from Arena.ai suggests Anthropic's top-performing models influence enterprise purchasing decisions. Funding status remains a critical predictor of AI adoption across businesses. Ramp's analysis reveals that companies backed by venture capital have an 80% adoption rate, while those supported by private equity show a 64% rate. In contrast, companies without such funding sit at a 45% adoption rate. Major technology firms, including Meta, Microsoft, and Visa, are also actively encouraging employees to integrate AI tools into their daily workflows, further driving industry-wide uptake. A notable event in February provided a reputation boost to Anthropic that likely accelerated this corporate shift. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attempted to pressure the company into accepting specific military terms of use for its Claude models. Anthropic refused the request, prompting President Donald Trump to order federal agencies to cease using the technology and the Department of Defense to label the firm a supply chain risk. In response, OpenAI stepped forward to offer its services to the military. However, the confrontation sparked a rally of public support for Anthropic, with users temporarily pushing Claude to surpass ChatGPT in App Store rankings and receiving backing from major tech partners like Microsoft. While Ramp's data represents a specific snapshot of its customer base rather than the entire market, it serves as a reliable indicator of shifting trends in business AI adoption. The rapid rise of Anthropic underscores how quickly the competitive landscape in artificial intelligence can change based on product utility, model performance, and high-profile corporate stance-taking. As enterprises continue to prioritize tools that enhance productivity and align with their values, Anthropic's momentum suggests it is poised to take a leading position in the AI spending sector in the near future.
