Users Flee ChatGPT for Claude Amid Ethics Controversies: How to Switch and Transfer Your Data Safely
Many users are making the switch from ChatGPT to Claude, driven by growing concerns over OpenAI’s recent partnerships and ethical stances. The shift gained momentum after Anthropic, the creator of Claude, publicly refused to allow the U.S. Department of Defense to use its AI models for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. In response, President Trump directed federal agencies to halt the use of Anthropic’s products, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled the company a supply-chain threat. Hours later, OpenAI announced its own Pentagon agreement, citing safeguards, but the move intensified debates about privacy, military use of AI, and corporate accountability. As a result, Claude has climbed to the top of the free app rankings in Apple’s U.S. App Store, surpassing ChatGPT. Anthropic reports record daily signups, a 60% increase in free users since January, and more than double the number of paid subscribers this year. For users seeking a more ethically aligned AI assistant, Claude has become a compelling alternative. If you're ready to make the switch, you can preserve your digital history and preferences by transferring your data from ChatGPT to Claude. Start by exporting your information. Go to ChatGPT’s Settings, then Personalization, and select Memory. Review and update any outdated details, then copy the content you want to keep. For a full backup, head to Data Controls and choose “Export Data.” ChatGPT will generate your chat history in text or JSON format and email it to you—note that this process may take time if you have extensive records. You can also manually save key conversations or ask ChatGPT to summarize your core preferences, frequently discussed topics, and custom instructions. This summary will be easier to import and more useful for Claude. Once you have your data ready, import it into Claude. Open the app, go to Settings, then Capabilities, and ensure Memory is enabled—this feature requires a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan. Begin a new conversation and use a prompt like: “Here’s some important context I’d like you to remember. Update your memory about me with this.” Paste your notes or summaries directly into the chat. If you’re working with exported files, don’t paste raw logs. Instead, ask Claude to review them and summarize your key preferences. After importing, verify that Claude has correctly captured your information by asking follow-up questions about your past conversations or preferences. You can always update your memory later as your needs evolve. To fully sever ties with ChatGPT, simply canceling your subscription isn’t enough—your data may still be retained. To permanently delete your account, go to Settings, then Data Controls, and select “Delete Account.” Follow the prompts to confirm. This ensures your personal data, including chat history and preferences, is removed from OpenAI’s systems.
