Google has introduced a new feature in the Chrome desktop browser called Skills, designed to streamline AI workflows by allowing users to save and reuse Gemini prompts across multiple webpages. Previously, performing repetitive tasks with Gemini required users to re-enter the same complex instructions every time they navigated to a new tab or page. This update eliminates that friction by transforming specific commands into persistent tools that can be activated with a single click on any selected tab. According to Chrome product manager Hafsah Ismail, the initiative aims to simplify common use cases such as requesting ingredient substitutions for vegan recipes while viewing cooking sites, or comparing product specifications across different shopping tabs. The feature effectively turns ad-hoc prompts into repeatable skills, enabling seamless execution of frequent AI tasks without manual re-typing or copy-pasting. The Skills feature is now rolling out to Chrome users with the US English language setting. To access the tool, users can type a forward slash within the Gemini interface and click the compass icon. Existing chat history on the desktop version allows for the direct conversion of prompts into Skills. Once saved, these prompts are synced across all desktop devices signed into the same Google account, ensuring consistency regardless of the machine used. In addition to user-generated skills, Google is launching a library of preset Skills that anyone can adopt immediately. These pre-configured commands serve as starting points, offering functional templates that users can further customize to suit their specific needs. Early testers have already created useful examples, including tools for calculating nutritional information in online recipes and generating side-by-side comparisons of product data. This update represents a shift in how integrated AI tools are used within web browsers, moving from a simple chat interface to a workflow-oriented utility. By allowing prompts to function as actionable commands rather than transient conversations, Google seeks to increase the productivity of Chrome users interacting with Gemini.
