Anthropic surpasses OpenAI in business AI adoption

For the first time, businesses are spending more on Anthropic than on OpenAI, marking a significant shift in the generative AI landscape. According to the latest AI Index from Ramp, a financial data platform, Anthropic reached a 34.4% business adoption rate in April, surpassing OpenAI's 32.3%. This data represents a dramatic reversal from earlier in the year, when OpenAI held a clear dominance across enterprise sectors including software development, finance, and customer support. Ramp tracks this spending by analyzing corporate card and bill-paying activity from over 50,000 US businesses, monitoring billions of dollars in monthly AI expenditures. While the index does not capture every corporate spend category, it provides a widely followed metric for understanding market trends. Anthropic's recent surge is largely attributed to the rapid adoption of its Claude Code tool for software development in late 2025 and early 2026. The company is now working to extend this momentum into other enterprise workflows, such as legal operations and research. Despite this milestone, experts warn that the shift may be temporary. Ramp economist Ara Kharazian emphasized the extreme volatility of the current software market, where companies frequently switch models based on cost, performance, and reliability. Factors such as rising token costs, compute shortages, and the growing appeal of cheaper open-source alternatives could quickly reshape the competitive field again within months. Kharazian noted that this is a unique era where newcomers can disrupt established leaders in a matter of months, with the pace of technological development often overriding typical vendor stickiness. Consequently, industry observers advise against interpreting Anthropic's current lead as a definitive long-term victory. The market remains highly dynamic, and the rapid pace of innovation means that today's leader can quickly find itself challenged. While Anthropic has successfully captured significant corporate attention, the trajectory of the AI industry suggests that business adoption will continue to fluctuate as companies evaluate the most effective tools for their specific operational needs. This data point serves less as a final verdict and more as an indicator of a rapidly evolving competitive environment where no single player is guaranteed permanence at the top.
