Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) refers to content optimization for AI answer engines, aiming to increase the probability of a brand being mentioned, cited, or recommended in generative responses. Unlike traditional search engines that return a list of links, when users directly query engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity, content must aim to become part of the answer itself, rather than merely appearing in the results list.
The concept of AEO originates from industry practices and lacks a widely recognized foundational paper. It overlaps significantly with Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and the two terms are often used interchangeably. In 2026, Kumar provided measurable metrics in the paper Generative Engine Optimization at Scale: Measuring Brand Visibility Across AI Search Engines. Covering over 100 brands and more than 100,000 prompt responses from March to May 2026, the study found that brand visibility exhibits a clear three-tier hierarchy: globally recognized brands appeared in 73% of relevant responses in the first run, mid-sized and regional brands at 44%, and niche brands at only 11%. Approximately 78% of the sources cited by the engines pointed to corporate official websites, with the remainder coming from third-party platforms.
The core value of AEO lies in transforming "being cited by AI" into a quantifiable metric, marking the formation of a new traffic entry point. It is necessary to distinguish that "being mentioned" is not equivalent to "being recommended," nor does it equal "being chosen."
